SoftBank’s America Unlimited : A Game-Changer for Travelers
Introduction
Contents
When I attended CES 2015 in the US, I tried out SoftBank’s “America Unlimited” service, which launched last September.
What is “America Unlimited”?
Many travelers are shocked by high phone bills after using their smartphones abroad due to expensive call and data charges. Flat-rate data plans don’t apply overseas, so people often rent Wi-Fi routers or buy local SIM cards to avoid these costs.
The Solution by SoftBank
SoftBank’s “America Unlimited” uses Sprint’s network in the US, allowing Japanese users to use their domestic rate plans while in the mainland US or Hawaii. Normally, this optional service costs 980 yen per month, but it’s currently free as part of a launch campaign.
Compatible Devices
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPad Air 2
- iPad mini 3 (during the campaign)
Pre-travel Settings
Steps to Take Before Boarding
Before boarding your flight to the US, SoftBank recommends:
- Go to
Settings > Mobile Data
. - Turn off 4G and Mobile Data.
Setup in the US
Upon Arrival
Upon arrival, you’ll receive an SMS from SoftBank reminding you to:
- Set “Carrier” in
Settings
to automatic. - Turn on “Cellular Data.”
- Enable “4G.”
- Ensure “Data Roaming” is off.
Network Coverage
This setup allows you to use the same pricing plan as in Japan while on Sprint’s network. If you move outside Sprint’s coverage, you’ll connect to other networks like AT&T or T-Mobile, but your data plan won’t apply.
User Experience
Connection Quality
Despite Sprint’s reputation for poor network quality, I found the connection better than expected at CES and airports in Los Angeles and San Francisco, though speeds were slow.
Data Usage Abroad
For personal travel, “America Unlimited” seems sufficient, eliminating the need for renting routers or buying local SIM cards, thus saving money for frequent or long-term travelers to the US.
